The London Borough of Greenwich was formed in 1965 and was conferred with Royal Borough status in 2012. Our main offices are based in Woolwich, one of the main town centres within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The story of the Royal Borough of Greenwich over the past twenty years is one of physical transformation through economic growth and regeneration.
This regeneration project forms part of the Royal Borough’s £300 million programme to create modern housing as well as training, employment and business opportunities for the community. Woolwich is one of the areas designated by the Council for major regeneration and is undergoing a period of rapid growth and transformation with new developments alongside existing its existing historic past. Rich in history and offering a stunning riverside location, Woolwich is set to continue its transformation with the arrival of Crossrail in 2018.
Woolwich Estates is a grant free scheme that ensures affordability of housing by setting out a blended approach to rent setting – family housing will be delivered at Social Target Rent along with an agreed ratio of 60%, and 80% Market Rent and intermediate (shared ownership) housing.
The Council has invested its land into this development to enable the scheme to include the cost of rehousing the former resident community and the establishment of a local community legacy through the development of a Community Trust Fund and an Estate Management Board. Any capital receipts received by the Council will be reinvested into generating or sustaining affordable housing for the borough.
